The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition is held every year at UWA. The aim is to condense your PhD research into a three minute speech, for a non-specialist audience. I’ve always found that the best way to understand something is to try to teach it to somebody else (and I like talking about myself) so I was super excited to enter.
I prepared a speech, tried (and failed) to memorise it, and gave it at the UWA semi-finals. I didn’t get through to the finals and I was quite disappointed, but having reviewed the video of my talk I’ve just realised I broke the first and most important rule of 3MT; Don’t Talk About Fight Club. OK that’s not really a rule, but I did talk for longer than three minutes, which I didn’t realise at the time because I couldn’t see the timer they provide above the lectern! In any case, I’m looking forward to next year’s competition.
